WAKAPalooza Weekend 2013

This passed weekend 76 teams traveled from 30 states to compete in WAKA Kickball's annual 'Founders Cup' and 'Fun Games' tournaments in Las Vegas, Nv. One of the teams, Waldo's Rebellion, was captained by Canyon's own E.J. Brown.

They went 2-0-1 in their pool play, won the tournament's 'Charity Heroes' award and even received some media coverage from the local news station. E.J. and the 'Rebellion did a great job representing our San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles & Ventura County family.

Congratulations Waldo's Rebellion.

STORY:

Why WAKA Kickball?

I wanted to play kickball and heard about it from Kara R. (member of Rogues) and was going to sign up on that team but they were full. So I signed up as free agent and got placed on Erica W.’s team in Canyon Spring ’13 (Bunt Cakes). We needed more players so I asked Sean P. and Katelyn, my roommates to join.  ~ Erik

Sean, Erik and I started the team after our first season on Bunt Cakes. We had so much fun meeting new people and being active on Monday nights. We wanted to keep playing so we started a Ca-Mercury team and gathered a few Bunt Cakes and recruited some of our friends to join as well. We told all of our friends about our Bunt Cake team and the word spread.  ~ Katelyn

What does "WAKA Kickball" mean to you?

Kickball is about forgetting the 9 to 5 life. For one night a week, we come together as friends and we just go out and play some kickball. We strive to have fun, play the game, and if we can...beat the other team.  ~ Sean

What's been your hardest struggle?

In Ca-Mercury last season, we started our schedule by facing the three toughest teams in the league:  Truckers, Kick My Balls Please, and Dark Side.  ~ Erik

What's been your greatest accomplishments?

In Ca-Mercury last season, we were expected to be at the bottom, but as the season progressed we bonded and soon we were the team to watch! In fact, we made to the semi finals, went on the take Dark Side to extra innings and almost won that game!  ~ Katelyn

Fondness memories so far?

Team bonding: "practices" at a nearby parks, BBQs, Sangria pool parties and weekend getaways to the lake house.  ~ All Captains

What's something special you've taken from playing for WAKA Kickball?

"What does the fox say?"
~ Amanda H. and Katie S.

Any "shout outs"?

Erika W., thanks for being a great mentor.  Sean P. and Katelyn, you are the best co-captains and roommates a guy could ever ask for. Ryan K., Branden K., Dani S., Dru E., and Elizabeth for representing "Bunt Cakes." Billy S., Janna W., Katie S., Amanda H., Hai-En Peng, Marie O., Alex A., Tom B., Julie D. and Chad B. the original "Fresh Prince" members.  ~ Erik

It's that time again!
